Elis Estrada is the News Literacy Project’s program manager for the Washington, D.C, region, which includes schools in the District of Columbia and its northern Virginia and Maryland suburbs.

This is the fourth position Elis has held since joining NLP as a part-time program assistant in New York City in December 2012. Until September 2014, she divided her time between NLP and NY1, the 24-hour local news channel owned by Time Warner Cable. Elis moved into to a full-time role at NLP as program coordinator in January 2015, and was promoted to New York program manager in September 2015, overseeing all classroom and digital programs at partner schools in New York City.

Elis began her journalism career in 2011 as a news writer at NY1. Within a year she was promoted to associate producer for NY1’s consumer investigative unit, NY1 for You. She also worked with the station’s education reporter to help produce breaking news and enterprise reports about New York City’s public education system. In addition, she has produced reports for PBS with the youth media program Children’s PressLine.

A graduate of Marymount Manhattan College, where she studied communication arts, Elis received a master’s degree in journalism, specializing in urban reporting and broadcast media, from the City University of New York.
