Sonya is the race/ethnicity/demographics editor at The Associated Press' Washington bureau, a position she has held since 2010.  Previously she was the news editor for the AP’s Washington-based regional reporters for six years. She has been at the AP since 1987, first as a general assignment reporter in Georgia and then as a reporter in Washington. She joined the White House press corps in 1995 and in 2002 was named Washington World Services editor, helping direct the AP’s coverage of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the worldwide campaign against terrorism. During the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks she was the print pool reporter who accompanied President Bush on Air Force One as he was flown from Sarasota, Fla. (his location when he learned of the attacks), to Air Force bases in Louisana and Nebraska and then back to Washington.
