Before joining CQ Roll Call as a defense writer in 2016, Gopal was a contributing writer at the Council on Foreign Relations. Before that, he was a senior writer for Foreign Policy magazine, where he covered the White House with a focus on the Obama administration's national security policies. Previously, he was a National Security reporter in the Washington bureau of Bloomberg News after eight years at Defense News, where he reported on arms trade, defense budgets and policy. He has been a reporter in India covering the country's economic liberalization measures in the mid-1990s. He has reported on national security issues from Europe to Australia. In 2013 he spent a month in Afghanistan reporting on the progress made and the challenges the country faces after 12 years of war.
