Byron (Barney) Calame

Byron E. (Barney) worked at The Wall Street Journal for almost 40 years, serving as a reporter, bureau chief, assistant managing editor and senior editor before retiring as a deputy managing editor in 2004. He later served as the public editor, or ombudsman, at The New York Times for a two-year term ending in 2007. His responsibilities serving in the No. 2 position in the news department during his final 12 years at the Journal included overseeing paper-wide quality control, maintaining and monitoring reporting and ethical standards, and taking charge of the paper in the absence of the managing editor.
